The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai, a constituent institute of Homi Bhaba National Institute, Mumbai, invites applications for its PhD and Integrated PhD programs in Theoretical Physics starting in this Autumn semester.

ELIGIBILITY
─────────────────────────────────────

- Ph.D.: Master's degree in Physics
- Integrated Ph.D.: Bachelor's degree in Physics or B.E./B.Tech
- Valid Physics score/rank from JEST, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, or TIFR-GS
- Two letters of recommendation (strongly encouraged)
- Ph.D. applicants must submit a research proposal (maximum 500 words)

The application portal is currently open, and will accept applications until 05.00 PM (IST) on 25th May, 2026 (Monday). The fields marked with a red asterix in the application form are mandatory. 

Please note that applicants are required to select their preferred stream of research: 

High Energy Physics: includes research in Astrophysics, Cosmology, Particle Physics Phenomenology, perturbative and non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory (QFT), String Theory. 

Low Energy Physics: includes research in Quantum Information, Quantum condensed matter, Soft condensed matter, Biophysics, Statistical physics, Nonlinear dynamics and Complex systems. 

Kindly note that the choice will aid the monitoring committee in advising admitted research scholars on their selection of elective courses, helping them align with their preferred research stream. 

Interviews will be held in person.
